Richard Meier - The Architect of Light

22.10.2004, 10.15 pm, ARTE

A Documentary by Gero von Boehm

His buildings are famous for the harmonic interplay of geometry and shapes. Over the years, Richard Meier’s compositions of squares, hemispheres, waves, triangles and pillars have sprung up all over the world. The colour white is the architect’s trademark of this architect, who is among the most significant of our times. He intriguingly employs it as a tableau for the incessant game of light, shadow and nature. The film provides a close-up portrait of Richard Meier, the architect of light. Not only did Gero von Boehm observe Meier’s process of design in the studio, he also accompanied Meier to inaugurate the completed Cathedral in Rome as well as the museum of the “Frieder Burda Collection” in Baden-Baden, Germany. He visited the famous “Grotta House” in New Jersey and – together with the architect – the “Saltzman House” in East Hampton (Long Island), where Meier’s private residence is also to be found: A 19th century farm house and an astonishing contrast to his architectural style.
